Preparation Guidelines

Prepare yourself for a great Headshot!

When you invest in a great headshot that will stand out from the crowd, preparation is the key.  The goal of a high-end headshot is to capture you looking your best.

Pearl will position you to photograph your best side, the lighting will be just right, but you will be the person in front of the camera, so it is important that you are ready.   You have made a commitment toward a high-end headshot, so bring you A-game by following the tips below.

Headshots for Women

Clothing

Make sure your clothing fits you.  Your clothes should not be too lose or too tight.  Try on your clothing a couple days before your session, to make sure the fit is right.  The right fit will make you look thinner.

Avoid bold prints.  The focus is on you.  The attention should be on you.  Your clothes should do their best to avoid bringing attention to themselves. When in doubt wear the staples - black, white or grey.  Dress to the formality of a business meeting of your industry.

For individual sessions, bring 4 or more of your best fitting professional tops or dresses. If you also want to try for a more casual look for online use in places such as Facebook, bring a couple of casual options.

Hair

Please style your hair appropriately.  We advise not to get your hair cut a couple of weeks before you headshot session.  Bring everything you need to style your hair, including hairspray to tame flyaways.

Makeup

If you have booked our makeup artist she will handle everything at your headshot session.  There will be no need to bring your makeup with you.

If you are doing your own makeup, please keep it simple and use a light hand.  We want your natural beauty to stand out, so a more natural look is best.  Heavy eyeliner can be very distracting in a headshot, so  I suggest you use a light application, if at all.  Please bring your makeup, including lipsticks and glosses, and tools should you need to add, remove or touch-up.  If you use a makeup with a built-in SPF we suggest using an anti-shine powder.

Jewelry

Headshots are all about facial expression and jewelry can be the one thing that can distract from your face the most.  If your ears are pierced, please wear stud earrings.  If you feel you must wear a necklace, go with pearls and keep it short so it does not intersect with the neckline on your top.

Glasses

If you wear glasses everyday, then you should wear them in your headshot.  If you wear contacts and sometimes wear glasses, bring your glasses with you.  If you have multiple glasses bring them too, so we can try multiple frames and lenses for your best look.

Headshots for Men

Clothing

Bring at least 2 suits or sport jackets and 3 or more plain dress shirts without patterns.  It is important that your shirt collars are crisp and have collar stays to prevent then from curling.  Gone are the days that being a professional means you need to wear a tie to work.  Dress to the formality of a business meeting of your industry.  If it is appropriate, skip the tie.  If you do need one, bring a couple simple tie choices, preferable without bold patterns.

If you also want to try for a more casual look for online use, bring a couple of casual options.  A leather jacket is the perfect option.

Hair

Please take time to style your hair.  Bring your styling products, comb and brush, should you need them.  Come freshly shaved or have your beard trimmed.  Please check your nose, eyebrows, and ear hairs.  Trim if necessary.

Glasses

If you wear glasses everyday, then you should wear them in your headshot.  If you wear contacts and sometimes wear glasses, bring your glasses with you.  If you have multiple glasses bring them with you, so we can try multiple frames and lenses for your best look.
